As readers, we hear the chords and melody simultaneously as we go seamlessly back and forth amongst the singularly sensitive, the often unintentionally humorous and the regionally cranky Southern psyche.

Add money, a list of righteous purveyors of interracial insemination, some of it in flagrante delicto, and sibling and half-sibling rivalry of biblical proportions that goes back generations.

Gabriel gives us the setting and masterfully-plied tension that makes Temple Secrets literary music. Temple Secrets is a page-turner of a story that goes deeper than most on the subjects of equality, courage and dignity.

There were five or six characters to love and a few to loathe. Their interactions with the outside world and one another are priceless moments of hilarious asides, well-aimed snipes and a plethora of sarcasms.

I especially loved the character of year-old Old Sally. In fact, at least four generations of her family are the product of Temple patriarchal entitlement.

Sally decides enough is enough of this Temple dynasty. If anyone else knows, no one is saying. When some people have far too much time, wealth and power and not enough humanness and courage?

I highly recommend this novel. Thomas on March 28, Susan Gabriel explores the nature of home and family in this wonderful story.

The Temple Secrets is a book that the matriarch of the family uses to threaten others into allowing her to do as she pleases.

The characters are strong and fascinating, particularly Queenie and Old Sally, but even Iris had a secret in her past. The lush southern setting sounds so lovely that I wish I could visit the characters in their home.

I couldn't put this book down. Loved every minute and I'm going to buy another Gabriel book for my Kobo tonight.

I love a meaty novel that gives me a great story, is well written, teaches me a few things and makes me - at various points - laugh out loud and cry.

Temple Secrets delivered all of that. I tend to be a silent laughter but I burst out with a few in this book! The story is narrated by four women: Queenie, Violet, Rose and occasionally Old Sally.

These women, black and white, have a lot of shared family history and to varying extent, genes. Queenie is hilarious, Violet, her niece has the third eye abilities she shared with Old Sally, her grandmother and the wise holder of the Gullah traditions, and Rose is the estranged daughter of Iris Temple, the matriarch of this entrenched, elite Savannah family.

I loved the characters in this book. Inciteful, strong women that i would love to know. I didn't want it to end.

Other scholars have noted this too, and Ezekiel Jewish tradition tells us that Jacob father of the twelve Israelite tribes saw the Temple in advance in his dream at Luz.

Later he changes it again to El Bethel God house of God In other words, as he slept — unbeknownst to him — his head and body became a model for the Temple that was eventually built atop Mount Moriah by King Solomon 2 Chronicles 3: Jacob Builds the Temple?

Why was Jacob given the dream at this time? Not solely because he was fleeing the wrath of his brother Esau, but also because he was on his way to Mesopotamia to find a wife and create a family , i.

This gives the Metallic Messiah a head, torso and pelvis of gold, but hands, legs and feet of bronze. Thus, we compare one nude figure with another, not a clothed one with a nude one.

Solomon himself was anointed in this manner, I Kings 1: But King Messiah — the Metallic Messiah — is or will be anointed with the Divine spirit that he may know how to rule the entire world, not national Israel only.

Jun 13, Christine rated it really liked it. I loved this book. Lightweight Southern Fiction with interesting characters, and lots of surprises.

The dialog is humorous at times, serious at others, all in a story that is engaging from start to finish. My Book Club enjoyed this, and the discussion about it.

Temple Secrets I loved this book. Maybe it's because the US just went through a terrible experience at Charlottesville Virginia, with KKK, White separates, Neo-Nazis, supposedly to protest the taking down of the confederate statue.

Or more likely because it was just a very very well written book. In fact Iris was the meanest woman in Savannah, especially when she passed gas.

The men were minor characters, Temple Secrets I loved this book. The men were minor characters, but probably more like the men I remember from a very short time in Savannah.

Normally, if there are ghosts in a book, I don't read it, but I sure am glad that I did. It told a story of how black slaves and servants are treated by some in the south, even now.

I know it's fiction and I know that all southerners are not like this. I suspect some still are. It also strengthened my conviction that taking down the confederate statues is the right thing to do, and that the confederate flag is still not something that is honorable.

I plan to read all of your books. Nov 06, Mary Lou rated it really liked it. If you were a fan of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil you will certainly enjoy Temple Secrets which is also set in the beautiful city of Savannah.

Iris is the current keeper of secrets and the matriarch of the Temple clan. Her meanness upsets not only the residents of Savannah but also the ghosts that reside in the Temple mansion.

When Iris is near the end of her life, her estranged daughter, Rose comes back to Savannah to offer assistance along with an estranged son who seeks only to collect his inheritance.

Besides Iris, I think one of the richest characters in this novel is Old Sally, who is also an expert in Gullah magic or witchcraft. There are many who suspect she has cast a voodoo curse on Iris.

Old Sally has children and grandchildren who figure into this tale. At years of age, Old Sally works hard to keep a watchful eye over the Temple family and her own family until the business of secrets and the settling of Iris's estate is completed.

I found this book to be humorous even though there were people who wished harm on the Temples. Somehow, the author managed to weave humor in with the greed and deception.

The description of the residents in Savannah reminded me of some of the stories I'd heard while visiting the city in Apr 20, Cindy Piller rated it really liked it.

A light read without being too fluffy. I was afraid I'd never keep all the women with flower names straight, Iris was easy, but then there was Rose, Violet, and Queenie's floral name, but as I continued to read, things fell into place.

Iris, a mean-spirited descendent of historical renown, controls those around her as well as far away with centuries of secrets carefully recorded in books kept under lock and key.

Turns out everyone has their secrets, including members of Iris' family. When someone begins publishing those secrets in the classified section of the local newspaper, life gets even more complicated.

Set in Savannah, this is a great summer or beach read, and plenty good for snowy, spring days. Loved it right up to ending Loved it right up to ending chapters and then it seemed to flounder and kind of fall apart.

The ending was rushed and it felt "like it was swept up into a tidy" summary ending. Then it felt like someone "unplugged the power" and the book suddenly became rushed and boring I was so disappointed Feb 05, Diana rated it really liked it.

I really enjoyed this book. I had some doubts as self published books usually receive such bad reputations, but this book puts those rumors to shame.

It is an easy read and engages the reader pretty quickly. I have seen comparisons to the book, The Help by Kathryn Stockett and would agree with those assessments.

In the end it is a book about inclusion. The only criticism I would have would be that the last chapter was a little too wordy and should have been "tied up" as well as it was "wrapped".

Apr 22, Marianne rated it it was amazing. A beautiful story of the the Temple family in Savannah, Georgia.

The book tells the story of many years of the family and how they interact with their employees. From the Civil War to present day, the interaction of two races keeps you wanting to finish the story but at the same time, not wanting it to end.

Too much Gullah, voodoo, and ghostly appearances. Oct 17, Gail rated it it was amazing. I cannot say enough about this book.

Everyone in Savannah high society seems to hope Iris Temple dies sooner rather than later. Almost no one likes her, and everyone has felt the sting from the crack of her verbal whip.

For generations she has held the Temple Book of Secrets as her primary weapon of potential mass destruction. Her lousy temperament and unapologetically insufferable air of condescension is another.

Gabriel has outdone herself in the perfectly on- point depiction of Iris Temple. What a masterful character creation!

No one knows who is doing this as the actual book of Temple Secrets is under lock and key. Is there a second copy somewhere? Susan Gabriel has captured the song of the South and Savannah as she plays both sides of the verbal harp with expert timing, authentic dialog and engrossing narrative.

The characters approach one another with a quirky queasiness that is laugh-out-loud funny just on the face of it.

Gabriel writes books that are an easy pleasure to read. An audio version of this book would be great! Keep in mind that everything about the Tabernacle Fig. A was portable, including its foundation.

To complete the rectangular foundation, another five sockets were placed on the eastern side, the entrance, but these were of bronze or copper The silver sockets on the south, north and west side formed a horseshoe like foundation on three sides of the Tabernacle — as did the priestly cells of the Temple, compare Fig.

But the number of cells or and sockets is not vital. The Tabernacle and Temple had similarities, and the correlation of the silver sockets and silver cells is one of them.
